Grandma's Date Squares

These homemade Date Squares are an old fashioned recipe that never goes out of style! Easy to make, we think they taste a whole lot better than the ones you get at Starbucks!

Base and Topping:
2 cups coarse oatmeal
1 cup white flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
pinch salt
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup butter ( or shortening. You may need 3/4 cup of butter )
Date Filling:
1 cup chopped dates
1 cup water
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp lemon juice
pinch baking soda
