Poached Pears - Slow Cooker

This method uses a slow cooker for maximum taste.

SERVES 4:
130g caster sugar
150ml water
300ml red wine
4 firm pears
Rind and juice of 1 orange
2 cinnamon sticks
Slow cooker
Vanilla ice cream or yoghurt to serve

1. Using a rolling pin, roll down one side of each of the cinnamon sticks (to bruise), and place these in the slow cooker cooking dish.
2. Add the sugar, water, wine, orange rind and orange juice to the cooking dish and turn the slow cooker to low. Cover with lid and cook for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
3. Peel the pears but leave the stalks intact. Cut out the cores from the bottom and level them. This enables them to stand up in the cooking dish.
4. Stand the pears up in the cooked syrup in the cooking dish, re-cover it and continue to cook on low for 4 to 6 hours, until they are tender.
5. Switch the slow cooker off and leave the pears to cool in the syrup, turning occasionally.
6. Serve the pears on plates, spooning over the syrupy mixture. Serve with ice cream, yoghurt and any other tasty leftover.
