Almost Tiramisu Double Espresso Chocolate Layer Cake

Italy's finest dessert in cake form! Rich, espresso soaked chocolate layer cake, filled with creamy mascarpone. This is one cake you won't forget in a hurry!

Cake:
120g (1 cup) good quality (over 70%) dark chocolate
¼ cup freshly brewed espresso (I used Etiopia Blend Forte) - see notes
80g (1/3 cup) butter (softened)
150g (¾ cup + 1 tablespoon) brown sugar
75g (¼ cup + 2 tablespoons) white sugar
2 eggs
¼ cup milk
¼ cup whipping/single cream
30g (¼ cup) cocoa powder
200g (1 + 2/3 cups) plain (all-purpose) flour
1 + ¼ teaspoons bicarbonate (baking) soda
1 teaspoon vanilla sugar (see here )
Coffee Syrup:
3 tablespoons (40ml/1.4oz) brewed espresso (I used Etiopia Blend Forte)
40g (¼ cup) brown sugar
1/4 cup water
Frosting:
250g (1 cup) mascarpone
200g (2 cups) icing sugar
