Old Fashioned Election Cake

This cake dates back to Colonial times, when it was served on Election Day to entice men to come down to the polls and vote!

Two .25-ounce envelopes dry active yeast (4 1/2 teaspoons)
1 cup warm water
3 cups all-purpose flour, divided
1 cup mixed dried fruit
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
1/2 cup apple juice
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon fine salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
1/4 cup granulated sugar
3 eggs
1/2 cup applesauce
1 tablespoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped pecans
For the glaze:
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
In a medium bowl, sprinkle the yeast over the warm water. Stir a few times and let stand to for 1 to 2 minutes, until yeast is bubbly. Add 1 1/2 cups of the flour to the bowl and stir until mostly smooth....
