Pineapple Upside-Down Pancakes

1/2 pineapple, sliced into 1/2? thick rings (use cookie cutter rounds to core slices and a large one to form the outer ring.
2 tablespoons butter
For pancakes:
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoons sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 cup buttermilk
oil for griddle
For topping and garnish:
1/2 cup brown sugar
4 maraschino cherries, stemmed
