Soft Oreo Cookies

Mom used to make these for an after school snack every once in a while. My siblings and I would jump off the bus and sprint home like our lives depended on it, so we could be the first to dig into the container full of soft, chocolate, cream-filled sandwich cookies. We were so crazy about them that Mom had to pull us away from the bowl after two or three, so we wouldn't overdose on sugar. :) We used to bring these cookies in bulk to parties and they always flew right off the platter. N

1 pkg. chocolate cake mix (I like to use Betty Crocker Super Moist Devil’s Food 15.25 oz)
2/3 c. shortening
1 t. vanilla
2 eggs

Frosting:
1 pkg (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened
1/2 c. (1 square) salted butter, softened
4 1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 t. vanilla
