Chocolate Birthday Cake

One of my favorite things in life is making someone a birthday cake. Birthdays are special, and I honestly feel like being able to make someone’s birthday cake is an honor. I mean, you don’t want just anyone making your special day cake! You want to be sure it’s going to be tasty! I feel as though the cake one gets for their birthday should represent the birthday boy or girl. I always try to make a cake with the person’s favorite flavors in mind. So when I realized my sister’s birthday was

1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup strong coffee (it can be hot, warm or cool)
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 Tablespoon vanilla
Chocolate Buttercream Icing
1 1/2 cups butter (not margarine)
3 3/4 cups icing sugar
9 Tablespoons cocoa powder
6 Tablespoons milk
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Prep your baking pans. I use the parchment paper method in the bottom of my cake pans, but you’re welcome to grease and flour – whatever works best for you.
