Enough bread to cover a 9x13 pan with a double layer (French bread, Challah, cinnamon bread or another favorite bread)
8 eggs
1/4 tsp. salt
5 cups whole milk or half and half
3 T. honey
1 tsp. vanilla
1 T. orange zest
powdered sugar, maple syrup, for serving
8 eggs
1/4 tsp. salt
5 cups whole milk or half and half
3 T. honey
1 tsp. vanilla
1 T. orange zest
powdered sugar, maple syrup, for serving
Place two layers of your favorite bread in a greased 9x13 pan. Whisk together the eggs, salt, milk, honey, vanilla and orange zest. Pour egg mixture over the bread in the pan. Press down gently with a spatula to make sure all the bread is covered with the custard ingredients. Heat the oven to 375 degrees, allowing the egg mixture time to soak into the bread. Bake for 35 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean and top is slightly golden. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and drizzle a little maple syrup over individual slices for serving.
