Parmesan Butter Breadsticks

Soft, chewy breadsticks are covered in Parmesan garlic butter.

2 packages (1/4 oz each) active dry yeast
1/2 cup sugar, divided
2 cups warm water, divided
3 tablespoons canola oil
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
4 1/2-5 cups flour
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
