Turkey meatballs in tomato sauce


Turkey meatballs don't have to be dry and tasteless. Adding sweet italian sausage to make juicy full flavored meatballs.

For the tomato sauce
1/2 cup of extra-virgin olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, grated
1 stalk celery, chopped
1 carrot, chopped
4 14oz can crushed tomatoes
4 to 6 basil leaves
2 dried bay leaves
Small pinch of red pepper flakes
Salt and ground black pepper

For the meatballs
1 pound ground dark turkey
1 pound sweet italian sausage, casings removed
1 cup plain breadcrumbs
1/4 cup whole milk, room temperature
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 small onion, grated
2 cloves garlic, grated
1/2 cup parmesan cheese, finely grated
1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
1 tablespoon tomato paste
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
