Sweet and savory, buttery and crunchy, this mashed Butternut Squash Casserole with apples, brown sugar, and pecans has it all! The layered make-ahead side dish has been a family favorite for over 40 years, and it's the perfect addition to your Thanksgiving or Christmas table!

3-4 medium apples, thinly sliced (we like to use a combination of Cortland, Golden Delicious, McIntosh, and/or Granny Smith apples)
6-8 T. butter ( divided )
¾ c. brown sugar ( divided )
1 t. salt
1 large butternut squash
2 c. Corn Flakes cereal
1 c. chopped pecans

Slice the apples, but do not peel. Sautee apples with 2 T. butter until soft. Sprinkle with ¼ c. brown sugar. Cook until tender. Place in the bottom of a 3-quart casserole dish.
