Beef and beer stew

I have recently started cooking with beer. I think it adds great flavors to stews and chilis. This one is made with a dark ale and had an awesome flavor.

2 lbs beef stewing cubes
2 Tablespoons oil or butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried basil leaves
2 bay leaves
2 cans (10 1/2 0z) condensed beef broth
1 tablespoon catsup
1 12 oz. bottle dark ale
4 medium carrots, chopped into 1-inch pieces
5 medium potatoes, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 medium onion cut into quarters
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup water
In a skillet brown the meat in the oil or butter. Add the herbs and seasonings, beef broth and beer. Cover and simmer for 2 hours. Add the vegetables and cook 30 to 45 minutes more, until vegetables are tender. Taste and add more salt or pepper if needed. In a small bowl mix the flour and water until smooth, stir until the stew is thickened.
