Grandma's Granola
April 15, 2013
10
A healthy, hearty breakfast granola, just like Grandma used to make.
12
2 cups water
1&1/2 cups honey
2 cups dry powdered milk
10 cups rolled oats
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup pureed applesauce
1/4 cup wheat germ
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup dried raisins or other dried fruit, optional
1 cup almonds or other nuts, optional
1&1/2 cups honey
2 cups dry powdered milk
10 cups rolled oats
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup pureed applesauce
1/4 cup wheat germ
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup dried raisins or other dried fruit, optional
1 cup almonds or other nuts, optional
In a really big bowl, mix the water, honey, and powdered milk until milk is dissolved. Add the oil and applesauce. Adding a few cups at a time, add the rolled oats. Stir well. Add remaining ingredients, except for dried fruit and nuts, if you are going to use them. Stir well until oats are completely coated. Spread in a thin layer on two greased cookie sheets. Bake at 275 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove pans from oven, and using a spatula, stir the granola and break it into chunks. Return pans to oven and bake for 30 more minutes. Add dried fruit and/or nuts during the last 5 minutes, if desired. Remove pans from oven, and let cool. Break granola into bite-size chunks with a spoon. Place granola in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator until ready to eat.
This recipe makes quite a lot of granola; however, it can easily be cut in half to make less if desired.
