Soft and Creamy Caramel Corn

I've been making this recipe for at least 25 years. It has always been a hit!

21-24 cups of popped popcorn
1/2 cup butter
1 cup light corn syrup
2 cups packed brown sugar
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-2 cups roasted nuts, optional
